KiCad MCP

Bring your AI assistant into your electronics workflow.

KiCad MCP connects an assistant that supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to KiCad on your computer. Inspect the board you are working on, explore component libraries and create or edit schematics using the context of your project.

From pinout to schematic

Explore a live PCB

Read footprints, nets, layers, tracks, vias and zones from the board open in KiCad. Inspect the current selection and board stackup.

Build and edit schematics

Generate a schematic from firmware pin assignments. Add symbols, label pins, update fields and place decoupling capacitors in existing designs.

Find the right components

Search symbol and footprint libraries, inspect pin definitions and check footprint references against the project's library tables.

Check your design

Run electrical and design rule checks, inspect netlists and export a bill of materials or schematic drawings.

Wiring with checks built in

The schematic routing tool turns local signal labels into drawn wires around components. Before saving, it checks that the netlist is unchanged and that the electrical rule check reports no additional violations. A dry run lets you inspect the result before writing it.

This routes schematic connections; PCB track routing is a separate task.

Try it on Windows

The project currently targets KiCad 10 on Windows and is distributed as source under the MIT licence. You will need KiCad, its bundled Python interpreter and an MCP-compatible assistant. The setup guide covers installation, client configuration and the environment check.

  1. Follow the setup guide to install the server with KiCad's Python.
  2. Run python -m kicad_mcp doctor from the configured environment to check the installation.
  3. Connect your MCP client. For live PCB access, enable KiCad's IPC API server and open a board from the project manager.

Schematic tools work directly with files, including while KiCad is closed. If a schematic is already open, save your manual edits before using the tools, then use File → Revert to load their changes before saving again in KiCad.

Development and feedback

Follow development in the source repository, or report an issue with your KiCad version and a reproducible example. macOS support is a proposed next step and is not available yet.
